Meet Marlowe

Meet Marlowe

Marlowe is a fighter. She suffered a stroke before birth, which caused brain swelling, seizures and permanent brain damage. But as a resilient young child, coupled with the strength and expertise of the staff at SickKids, Marlowe began hitting all of her cognitive milestones. To help Marlowe increase her mobility, she has a leg orthotic, a hand brace and currently receives regular care with physio and occupational therapy to help her reach her fullest potential. In April 2011, Marlowe will meet her new little brother or sister. Her parents credit the staff at SickKids with giving them the confidence to expand their family.

Meet Joey

Meet Joey

Joey has an infectious spirit and a rare gift for making others feel at ease. These qualities came in handy when Joey found himself on the cancer ward at The Hospital for Sick Children. While most of his classmates began Grade 2, Joey endured countless tests, several rounds of chemotherapy treatment and a 16-hour surgery at SickKids. Joey’s type of cancer, Ewing’s sarcoma, is a rare childhood bone cancer usually found in young adults. Joey has remained brave throughout his treatment. He completed his chemotherapy and now visits SickKids for regular check ups. He has decided that it’s his mission to share his story and to help others who are going through cancer treatment.

Meet Sierra

Meet Sierra

To look at five-year-old Sierra you would never guess she suffers from a chronic disease with no known cure. Cystic fibrosis affects the lungs and digestive systems making it tough to breathe. Fortunately for Sierra, her condition mainly affects her digestive system, which makes it easier to manage. Sierra relies on a number of medications and daily physiotherapy to combat the symptoms of her illness. As she grows older, she will take a more active role in her treatment but for now, she and her parents feel lucky to have an invaluable team at SickKids to help them through the difficult process of managing CF.
